Sometimes, a trip to the beach isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity. Juggling family, life, and work can be overwhelming. Taking care of oneself sometimes means packing up the car and heading to the nearest stretch of sand seeking cheap beach vacations.
Whether it’s a spontaneous drive down to a local beach, or a carefully planned weekend escape, these trips can be incredibly rejuvenating. I spoke to members of our team of 100+ people to gather their first-hand experiences to create a list of our top 12 budget-friendly cheap beach vacations in the USA.
As avid beachgoers, some of my teammates have spent countless summers exploring the best budget-friendly beach destinations across the United States. Their trips have ranged from the sunny shores of California to the tranquil beaches of Texas. I interviewed several coworkers to gather information on a collection of beach trips to determine which 12 beaches make for the best budget-friendly trips. In this article we’ll share their memories, advice, and first-hand experiences.
Top 12 budget-friendly cheap beach vacations
Please be advised that these suggestions for cheap beach vacations are in no particular order. Like always, Net Pay Advance draws focus on saving money. Often times the cheapest beach is the one within driving distance for you and if not, maybe there are cheap flight options you can explore. Hopefully if you have several affordable beach vacations to pick from, you can use this article as a guide.
1. Huntington Beach, California

One of my favorite places to visit is Huntington Beach. Lovingly known as “Surf City USA,” it’s located just a little over 35 miles south of Los Angeles. This beach offers an ideal mix of sun, sand, and surf. With its 10 miles of uninterrupted shoreline, there’s plenty of space to find something fun. Huntington Beach is a haven for surfers and beach lovers alike. While families are welcome, I think this is better for a couple’s trip, or even a solo trip. It has a bit more of a party atmosphere than some of the other places on this list.
The sand and waves aren’t the only thing this lovely beach has to offer. I recommend spending time on Huntington Beach Pier! Unlike some of the other piers on this list of cheap beach vacations, it is free to visit. Although, be aware there are costs for parking. The pier is great for fishing, watching surfers, or just enjoying the ocean air. There are stores and even a restaurant there!
3. Pacific Beach, California

My teammate snapped this picture on a recent trip.
Pacific Beach, part of San Diego’s Mission Bay region, is another top pick for those seeking cheap beach vacations. This vibrant destination is dotted with fun things to do that entice younger crowds and has a laid-back feel to it. Go swimming or surfing or even sunbathing if you aren’t keen on barhopping and shopping like many do. Some visitors choose to stay in the over-the-water cottages at Crystal Pier for a unique and enjoyable experience. Availability of affordable food and boarding options earns Pacific Beach a solid spot on this list.
Surfing is a popular thing to do here. The Tourmaline Surfing Park has glowing reviews and recommendations on Yelp. Some describe it as a great place for surfers of all skill levels. Dogs are allowed on a leash during certain hours of the day.
3. South Padre Island, Texas

Known for its tranquil waters and stunning beaches, the South Padre Island in Texas is a deserving contender for a spot on my list of cheap beach vacations. Apart from the usual beach activities, this place has historic landmarks like the Port Isabel Lighthouse, which was built in 1851. Paddle boarding and kiteboarding are unique activities to try out when visiting South Padre Island. The area has several affordable options for dining and lodging.
If you’re looking for a party place, my teammate recommends South Padre Island. You’ll notice a fleet of golf carts – everyone drives them. My teammate enjoyed taking a boat out to cruise the ocean.
When it comes to the area, the beach has more of a young-adult vibe during spring-break, but during off-seasons, it is relatively kid-friendly. Some things are overpriced. McDonald’s, for example, has items significantly more expensive than in Kansas.
If possible, I recommend taking advantage of package deals to save money and have a reasonably priced overall trip. If not, there are hotels in the area, and back on the main land that are reasonably priced under $100.
4. Port Aransas, Texas

With gorgeous beaches and fascinating wildlife, Port Aransas is a must-go destination when picking cheap beach vacations. There is an observation tower at Roberts Point Park that offers the perfect spot for dolphin sighting. From alligators to a variety of birds, there’s never a dull moment for animal lovers. There is no lack of affordable dining and lodging options either.
Some travelers have raved about seeing dolphins! With over 18 miles of sandy beach, you can have the absolute best time here. Also, so long as you have a beach parking permit, you can drive your car or RV anywhere along the beach. If camping isn’t your thing, there are hotel options for under $100 that you can check out.
5. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Looking for some good old-fashioned family fun? Go to Myrtle Beach and you won’t be disappointed. With over 60 miles of beach, you can have your pick of favorite beach activities.
Not to mention, there are over two thousand restaurants for you to choose from. In addition to attractions such as golfing, shopping, and live music, there is Skywheel to take you to new heights! This place is brimming with things to do for every budget and that’s why I added it to my list of cheap beach vacations.
There is a mailbox along the beach called “The Kindred Spirits Mailbox”. It’s a bit of a walk down the beach, but you can write anonymously in journals there. On top of it, the place has a 1950’s style feel to it, that’s utterly charming! Myrtle Beach makes for a thoroughly enjoyable and fairly affordable family-friendly trip!
6. Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina

Those that love the great outdoors, simply fall in love with everything the Huntington Island State Park in South Carolina has to offer. From fishing and exploring, to dolphin tours and other fun activities, you’ll find something that piques your interest. The town itself is steeped in history that is worth looking into during your trip. I strongly recommend giving it a try when seeking affordable beach vacations.
If you’re looking to travel without hotel costs, you’re in luck at Hunting Island State Park. There are two campgrounds. Talk about the ultimate affordable beach vacation!
There is a secluded spot located within the park that has a historic 1859 lighthouse on it. This lighthouse is no longer operating but you can see it from the outside.
7. Grand Isle Beach, Louisiana

Did you know that Grand Isle Beach is Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island? How cool is that! Visitors enjoy activities like swimming, boating, camping, paddling, fishing, and hiking at the Grand Isle State Park. With several low-cost options when it comes to activities, food, and boarding, Grand Isle Beach secures a spot on my list of cheap beach vacations.
There’s quite a lot of things to enjoy about this beach: scenic views, quietness, and overall cleanliness of the beach and the state park. Bird lovers are in for a treat! There are quite a lot of different birds that frequent the area. Most notably, in the spring, many birds migrate to this area. There’s even a Migratory Bird Festival, where one year 168 different bird species were identified!
8. Pensacola, Florida

From the soft white sand to the brilliant emerald waters, Pensacola is simply surreal. Believe me, pictures and videos don’t do justice to this breathtakingly beautiful paradise on earth. From family-friendly activities to refreshing nightlife, this is a must-go when looking at cheap beach vacations.
There’s a lot to do in Pensacola if you’re staying in town. It is close to other gulf beaches and within an hour or two drive if you want to explore outside of the area. Pensacola beach is beloved because of the sand, water and overall vibe. It’s more adult-friendly, but it makes for a great walking/swimming beach. Also, there is a boardwalk with restaurants, entertainment and shopping. You can dine at open-air restaurants if you want.
My teammate said the sand is beautiful, and you can easily walk barefoot on the beach. It’s definitely recommended for a romantic getaway.
Another teammate visited during spring-break and observed that the beach was clean but very busy. So, the time of the year does impact how crowded the beach can get.
There is a wide variety of tourist shops that fit both adults and children. They conveniently have rental shops on the beach that offer beach chairs, umbrellas, scuba gear, paddle boarding, surfboards, clothing, towels, etc.
Multiple teammates highly recommend the Miami Children’s Museum especially if travelling with children. Another recommendation was Brickell City Centre to grab lunch and enjoy arcade games and mini golf.
Please know that the cost of food, shopping, and attractions might be more expensive than in Kansas (or wherever you live if it is a medium or low-cost-of living area) but matched up with what you would see at most tourist spots.
9. Clearwater Beach, Florida

Clearwater Beach is most known for its soft, white sand and clear, shallow waters. It’s ideal for families. My teammate who loves affordable beach vacations, shared that they could hang out in the water and walk barefoot on the beach during their most recent trip.
The water isn’t sparkling blue, but it is clear enough to see small fish. Also, there aren’t enough waves for surfing, but the shallow water makes it easy to float and play games with friends and family.
While the beach is lined with shops and restaurants, one might find the immediate area a little pricey. However, if you drive back to the mainland over the Clearwater Memorial Causeway, prices are a lot better! Plenty of affordable restaurant options, and some reasonably priced hotels make this a solid recommendation. Clearwater being slower paced than Tampa makes it a refreshing getaway.
My teammate suggests visiting Pier 60 for fishing to watch the sunset. There is a fee to walk on the pier, but there are usually nightly celebrations featuring street performers and local artists. It’s a good spot to go at least once, which is why it had to be included in our list of cheap beach vacations.
10. Gulfport, Mississippi

Looking for a scenic escape from the monotony of daily life? Head to Gulfport, located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It truly embodies the tranquility of beaches with southern charm. While you are there, enjoy the Gulf Islands Waterpark and the Missouri Aquarium. When looking for cheap beach vacations, this one comes with several inexpensive dining and boarding options.
A teammate shared that they visit Gulfport quite often and that it is one of the world’s longest man-made sand beaches. They also talked about their experiences, which includes cookouts, camping in an RV park, swimming, and feeding the Dolphins at the Ocean Adventures Marine Park, and more.
11. Gulf Shores, Alabama

Are you a budget-conscious beachgoer like me? Gulf Shores in Alabama is just what you need. With picturesque white sand and gentle waves, this is a great pick for relaxation without breaking the bank. The sand is made up of pure white quartz grains that came from the Appalachian Mountains, which explains its color.
Gulf State Park offers some of the best and cheapest beaches to visit in the area, offering free access. Currently, there are eight public beaches in Gulf Shores for you to enjoy. Also, there are 50 bikes you can ride free of charge for up to three hours. The park has picnic areas and plenty of avenues to enjoy hiking, birdwatching, fishing, etc.
This one wasn’t initially on my list, but a very persistent teammate made me reconsider. They described inexpensive visits to the Gulf Shores in recent years complete with a condo on the beach through Vrbo, shopping, enjoying the nightlife, and of course, experiencing the beach. They were adamant Alabama’s Gulf Shore should be included on a list of the best cheap beach vacations.
12. Shelter Cove, California

Shelter Cove is a remote coastal community nestled on California’s Lost Coast. It offers stunning views and secluded beaches which make it an excellent choice for hiking, fishing, and other activities. This place also attracts seasonal whale-watchers.
A highlight of Shelter Cove is the Black Sands Beach with its dark sand. If you’re for cheap beach vacations, you will love the affordable restaurants and lodging options in the area. If golfing is your thing, the Shelter Cove Golf Links is the spot for you. It can be described as having a “middle of nowhere feel.”
Travel loans: Making your trip possible
While planning a budget-friendly beach vacation, sometimes unexpected expenses can arise. Whether it’s an emergency trip, a once-in-a-lifetime event, or simply making your dream beach vacation a reality, travel loans can help cover the necessary costs.
In addition, sometimes unexpected expenses arise while traveling. Maybe plans fall through and you have to book a new hotel or plane ticket. Refunds won’t always be issued on the same day, but you still need the money. This is another place where travel loans can help. Emergency loans like these can provide the financial support needed for airfare, accommodations, and other travel-related expenses.
With flexible repayment options, speed, and convenience, travel loans can make it easier to manage your budget while still enjoying the cheapest beaches to visit.
Let’s go to the beach!
In conclusion, the United States offers a plethora of stunning, budget-friendly options for cheap beach vacations. From the bustling boardwalks of Myrtle Beach to the serene shores of Shelter Cove, there are affordable beach vacations to suit every traveler’s taste.
